Backup & storage engineer:the job that saves the company on its worst day.
SAN, NAS, object storage, backup software, replication, DR drills. Under-supplied, well-paid, and the first person a ransomware-hit company calls. If you like systems that must not fail, this is the path.
What the job is
- Operate SAN/NAS (HPE, Dell, NetApp, Pure), zoning, LUN provisioning, capacity and performance
- Run backup platforms (Veeam, Commvault, Proxmox Backup Server, Bacula), jobs, retention, verification
- Design 3-2-1 and immutable backups; run restore and DR tests; report RPO/RTO compliance
- Replication, snapshots, storage tiering; Ceph/ZFS in open-source estates
