Where India is, and where the jobs are:data centers, AI mission, hiring, regulation.

A fact-based snapshot for students and founders: capacity, government programmes, hiring demand by skill and city, and the rules that shape IT work in India. Updated as the numbers change.

Data center capacity

  • Installed capacity grew more than four-fold from 375 MW (2020) to about 1,575 MW (2026) per MeitY; a government report projects ~9.2 GW by 2030.
  • Hubs: Mumbai/Navi Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Gujarat; emerging: Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal.
  • What it means for careers: thousands of DC technician, facilities, network and NOC roles outside the traditional metros.

IndiaAI Mission

  • Outlay of about ₹10,372 crore; shared compute of 45,000+ GPUs (June 2026), with the government funding up to 50% of AI compute infrastructure and a stated target of ~200,000 GPUs.
  • AI Kosh hosts 14,000+ datasets and 331 models; 20 indigenous foundation-model projects selected (12 large multimodal, 8 small language models).
  • For engineers: subsidised GPU hours for startups and researchers; demand for GPU infrastructure, MLOps and data engineering skills.

Hiring demand (foundit IT trends, 2026)

  • AI/ML, cloud and cybersecurity account for ~65% of tech hiring demand; AI/ML engineers +28% YoY, DevOps +19%, data scientists +24%, generative AI/LLM skills +26%.
  • Declining: QA/test automation (−2%), IT support/helpdesk (−3%) — automate or move up the stack.
  • Delhi-NCR is the fastest-growing hiring market (+28% YoY); Tier-II cities take ~40% of additional hiring; GCCs (global capability centres) expected to reach 44% of IT hiring and add ~132,000 jobs.
  • 71% of employers prioritise skills over degrees — portfolios and hands-on certs matter more than college names.

Regulation that shapes IT work

  • DPDP Act 2023 (Digital Personal Data Protection): consent, purpose limitation, breach notification, Data Protection Board; rules phasing in — every business handling personal data needs a data map and controls.
  • Sector rules: RBI (payment data localisation, IT governance), SEBI (cyber resilience framework), IRDAI (data in India), CERT-In directives (incident reporting within 6 hours, log retention 180 days).
  • Standards buyers ask for: ISO 27001, ISO 20000, SOC 2; MeitY-empanelled cloud for government work.

What to do with this (students & founders)

  • Students: pick a path from the role guides; build a portfolio; target Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or a growing Tier-II hub; learn cloud + one of (security, DevOps, data/AI).
  • Founders: hybrid infrastructure with Indian-region cloud; DPDP compliance as a selling point; AI agents for lead response and support; measure everything.
