Security engineer:from SOC analyst to the person who signs off.
One of the three fastest-growing hiring areas in Indian IT. The entry door is the SOC; the destination is security architecture, cloud security or GRC. The whole path rewards people who understand systems, not just tools.
What the job is
- SOC: triage alerts in a SIEM (Splunk, Sentinel, Wazuh, ELK), investigate, escalate, write incident notes
- Infra security: hardening Linux/Windows, patch management, vulnerability scanning (Nessus/OpenVAS), EDR
- Identity: MFA, SSO, privileged access, least privilege reviews
- Cloud security posture, WAF, DDoS, email security (SPF/DKIM/DMARC)
- GRC: ISO 27001 controls, risk registers, audits, evidence

- Networking and OS fundamentals first — you cannot secure what you do not understand
- Log analysis, SIEM query languages (SPL/KQL)
- Vulnerability management lifecycle
- Threat models, MITRE ATT&CK vocabulary
- Scripting (Python/PowerShell) for automation

Product companies and GCCs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi-NCR pay at the top of each band; service companies at the bottom. Contract/migration work pays a premium.
Labs to do this month- Deploy Wazuh, ship logs from 3 VMs, write 5 detection rules and test them
- Harden an Ubuntu server with CIS benchmark; scan before/after with OpenVAS
- Run the DNS/email check on 10 real domains and write the fix list
