Network engineer:the path, the certs, the pay.
Routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, Wi-Fi, SD-WAN — the layer every other IT job depends on. Still one of the most reliable careers in Indian IT, and the one most students skip because it looks "old".
What the job is
- Design and operate LAN/WAN, VLANs, routing (OSPF/BGP), NAT, VPNs between offices, data centers and clouds
- Firewalls and segmentation (Fortinet, Palo Alto, Sophos, pfSense/OPNsense), Wi-Fi design, load balancers
- Troubleshoot "the network is slow" with packet captures, SNMP/NetFlow and a method
- Document: IP plans, diagrams, change tickets; work with ISPs and data-center cross-connects

Labs to do this month- Build two "sites" in GNS3 with OSPF and an IPsec tunnel; capture and explain the handshake
- Replace a home router with pfSense/OPNsense; write the firewall policy as a table first
- Automate VLAN creation on 3 switches with Ansible
