Key takeaways
- Infrastructure is the least crowded, best-paid entry into IT for people who like systems more than syntax. Demand in India is driven by data-center builds, cloud migrations and the AI compute wave.
- Learn in this order: Linux → networking → virtualization → storage & backup → one cloud → automation → monitoring → security basics. Skipping Linux and networking is why most people stall.
- You do not need an expensive lab. A laptop with 16 GB RAM running Proxmox or VirtualBox, plus free tiers of a cloud, is enough for 90% of this roadmap.
- Certifications that actually move Indian resumes: RHCSA, CCNA, AWS Solutions Architect Associate, Proxmox/VMware (VCP), Terraform Associate. Skip the rest until you have a job.
- Build a public portfolio: a GitHub repo with your lab notes, Ansible playbooks and one documented "HLD" of a small environment beats any number of course certificates.
Stage 0 — Mindset (week 0)
Infrastructure engineers are paid for uptime and judgment. The job is: understand how systems fail, design so they fail safely, and fix them calmly at 3 a.m. Your learning should always end in "I broke it, I understood why, I fixed it, I documented it."
Stage 1 — Linux (weeks 1–6)
- Install Ubuntu Server and Rocky Linux in VMs. Do everything from the terminal.
- Filesystem hierarchy, permissions, users/groups,
systemd, journald, package managers, networking (ip,ss,nmcli), storage (lsblk, LVM,mkfs, mount, fstab), processes, cron, SSH keys, firewalls (nftables/ufw),rsync,tar, text tools (grep, awk, sed). - Lab: build a web server + reverse proxy + database on three VMs, break the disk, recover from a backup.
- Certification: RHCSA (hands-on exam; the only Linux cert most Indian employers recognise).
Stage 2 — Networking (weeks 7–12)
- OSI/TCP-IP, subnetting (use our subnet calculator until you can do it in your head), VLANs, routing, NAT, DNS, DHCP, TLS, HTTP.
- Lab: GNS3 or Packet Tracer; build two sites with a VPN between them. Capture packets with Wireshark and explain a TCP handshake.
- Certification: CCNA (still the standard signal for "understands networks").
Stage 3 — Virtualization & private cloud (weeks 13–18)
- Proxmox VE on your laptop (nested virtualization works). Create VMs and LXC containers, templates, cloud-init, snapshots, live migration between two nodes (two old PCs or two VMs).
- Understand vCPU overcommit, memory ballooning, VirtIO, storage types (ZFS vs LVM-thin vs Ceph).
- Read the VMware vSphere concepts too — most Indian enterprises still run it and many are migrating; knowing both makes you employable on migration projects.
- Lab: 3-node Proxmox cluster with Ceph in nested VMs; survive a node failure.
Stage 4 — Storage & backup (weeks 19–22)
- RAID levels, SAN vs NAS vs object storage, iSCSI, NFS, FC basics, ZFS (pools, datasets, snapshots, send/receive), Ceph concepts (OSD, MON, PG, replication vs erasure coding).
- Backup theory: RPO/RTO, 3-2-1, incremental-forever, verification, immutability.
- Lab: Proxmox Backup Server; back up your cluster, restore a single file, verify, prune.
Stage 5 — One public cloud (weeks 23–30)
- Pick AWS (largest Indian job market) — VPC, EC2, IAM, S3, RDS, Load Balancers, Route 53, CloudWatch, cost explorer. Learn Azure later if you target enterprise/Microsoft shops.
- Lab: deploy the Stage 1 app on AWS with Terraform; put a budget alarm on it; destroy it.
- Certification: AWS Solutions Architect Associate.
Stage 6 — Automation (weeks 31–36)
- Git (properly), Bash, Python basics, Ansible (inventory, playbooks, roles, idempotency), Terraform (state, modules), CI basics (GitHub Actions).
- Lab: Ansible playbook that builds your whole Stage 1 environment from zero; Terraform that builds the AWS one.
Stage 7 — Monitoring & operations (weeks 37–40)
- Zabbix or Prometheus + Grafana, alert design (what wakes a human, what doesn't), log aggregation (Loki/ELK), on-call etiquette, incident write-ups, change management (what a CAB wants to see).
- Lab: monitor everything you built; write one incident report for a failure you caused.
Stage 8 — Security basics (weeks 41–44)
- Patching discipline, least privilege, SSH hardening, TLS everywhere, secrets management, MFA, backups as ransomware defence, ISO 27001 vocabulary (controls, risk register, evidence).
Salaries you can expect (India, 2026, typical)
| Role | Experience | Range |
|---|---|---|
| NOC / L1 support | 0–1 yr | ₹2.5–4.5 LPA |
| Linux / cloud engineer | 1–3 yrs | ₹5–10 LPA |
| Infrastructure engineer (virtualization, storage) | 3–6 yrs | ₹9–18 LPA |
| Senior / lead, architect | 6+ yrs | ₹18–40 LPA |
Product companies and global captives in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and NCR pay at the top of these bands; service companies at the bottom. Contract roles for migrations pay well for 6–12 month stints.
Your portfolio (do this from week 1)
A public GitHub repo: homelab/ with a README that reads like an HLD (diagram, IP plan, decisions), ansible/, terraform/, runbooks/ (how to recover each service), and incidents/ (what broke, why, fix). Hiring managers read this; they do not read certificate PDFs.
Free resources we actually recommend
Linux Journey, the RHCSA objectives list, Jeremy's IT Lab (CCNA), Proxmox documentation and forum, the AWS Skill Builder free tier, Ansible and Terraform official tutorials, "Site Reliability Engineering" (free online), and our free tools for daily practice.
We hire and train infrastructure engineers for client projects. If you have finished Stage 4 and have a portfolio, write to us.
