Key takeaways
- The five largest Indian IT services firms added a net 13,918 people in July–September 2026, as reported from company disclosures. HCLTech grew the most (+6,450). Wipro shrank the most (−6,716).
- Campus intake has not stopped. Infosys onboarded about 8,000 graduates in the quarter and is sticking to its FY27 target of 20,000. TCS brought in roughly 10,000. HCLTech's intake rose from 1,056 to 6,136 in one quarter.
- Active tech openings hit about 1.23 lakh in early October, up 17% year on year, according to Xpheno data as reported. Entry-level roles were only about 15,000 of that total. Mid-senior roles were about 68,000.
- The World Bank's October India Development Update estimates that 22% of Indian employment is highly exposed to AI task changes. It frames this as a shift in how people are hired and trained, not a job-loss forecast (summary).
- What this means for you: the first job still exists, but fewer roles are pure "learn on the job" coding. A fresher who can show that they ship, operate and debug real systems (cloud, Linux, data, AI tooling) stands out from the pile.
1. What came out this month
October is results month for Indian IT, and this year three sets of data landed within a few weeks of each other:
- Q2 FY27 results from TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro and Tech Mahindra, with headcount and fresher numbers (mid- to late-October).
- Xpheno's active tech jobs snapshot, a count of open tech job postings in India in early October. It was first reported around 5–6 October and has been widely re-reported since.
- The World Bank's India Development Update, titled India and Artificial Intelligence, released in early October. It reuses a large ICRIER survey of Indian IT firms on how AI is changing hiring.
Each one alone gives a misleading picture: "IT is hiring again", "AI is killing fresher jobs". Read together, they tell a more useful story.
2. The big-five headcount picture (Q2 FY27)
| Company | Net change, Jul–Sep 2026 | Headcount, 30 Sep 2026 | Freshers in the quarter | FY27 fresher signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HCLTech | +6,450 | 2,30,339 | 6,136 | ~10,000–11,000 for the year |
| Tech Mahindra | +5,446 | not reported in source | not disclosed | — |
| Infosys | +4,480 | 3,32,542 | ~8,000 | 20,000 target retained, more than half done |
| TCS | +4,258 | 5,98,056 | ~10,000 (~24,000 in H1) | — |
| Wipro | −6,716 | 2,36,328 | not disclosed | "depends on business requirements" |

Two things stand out. First, a net gain of about 14,000 across companies that together employ more than 15 lakh people is close to flat. Most of the hiring is replacing people who left, not growth. Second, the firms that grew are the ones talking about AI-led deals. TCS reported annualised AI revenue of about $3.1 billion, and HCLTech said its hiring reflects demand for AI engineering and client-facing technical roles.
3. Openings are up, but the first rung is narrow
The Xpheno snapshot (as reported, not a count of hires) shows where the open jobs are:
| Slice | Active openings (approx.) | Year on year |
|---|---|---|
| Total tech openings | 1,23,000 | +17% |
| Mid-senior experience | 68,000 | +19% |
| Entry level | 15,000 | +15% |
| IT services firms | 66,000 | +57% |
| Global Capability Centres (GCCs) | 18,000 | +64% |
| Software product companies | 16,000 | −38% |
| Funded startups | 12,000 | −29% |
| Tier-2 / tier-3 cities | 40,000 | +67% |
| Remote roles | 10,000 | −23% |

What it tells you:
- Entry-level roles are about one in eight openings. Demand is growing, but it starts from a small base. Mid-senior roles outnumber entry roles more than four to one.
- IT services firms and GCCs are hiring. Startups and product companies are not. If your placement strategy is "only product startups", you are aiming at the shrinking part of the market.
- Jobs are moving outside Bengaluru. Tier-2 and tier-3 openings grew far faster than the big hubs. Delivery centres and GCCs in smaller cities usually come with a lower cost of living than Bengaluru, too.
- Remote is shrinking. Expect to work from an office at least part of the week in your first job.
4. Why entry-level is the pressure point: the AI factor
The ICRIER study surveyed 651 IT firms across 10 cities. 55% of them reported lower entry-level hiring after adopting AI tools, while 42% reported higher mid-level hiring. The roles firms saw as most exposed were application developers, software developers and database designers: the classic fresher intake.
The World Bank's October update builds on that and makes a sharper point. If AI takes over the routine tasks that used to train new hires, such as boilerplate code, test scripts and first-line tickets, companies need another way to build early-career skill. The Bank argues for apprenticeships, workplace learning and targeted reskilling, rather than training only specialist AI developers. ICRIER found that only 4% of IT firms have trained more than half their workforce in AI-related skills, so the training gap sits inside companies as much as in colleges.
In plain terms: firms still need juniors, but they want juniors who already do the kind of work the AI cannot do alone: debugging, judging, integrating, operating.
5. A 90-day plan for 2026–27 graduates
| Weeks | Do this | Proof you can show |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Linux and networking basics: shell, processes, systemd, DNS, TLS, subnetting | A public notes repo, plus a server you set up and secured yourself |
| 4–6 | One cloud, properly: IAM, VPC, compute, storage, a managed database, billing alerts | A small app deployed with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or CloudFormation), with a cost estimate in ₹ |
| 7–9 | Use AI coding tools and review their output: write tests, catch bad suggestions, document your prompts | A pull request where you explain what the AI got wrong and how you fixed it |
| 10–12 | Operate it: logs, metrics, an alert, a short incident write-up ("what broke, how I found it") | A one-page runbook linked from your resume |
Why this mix: it maps to what is growing. Services and GCC delivery work, cloud and AI engineering roles, and mid-level "own the system" work all need people who can operate systems, not just write code. The cost is low. A cloud free tier plus a ₹500–₹1,500 monthly budget cap, with an alert set, covers most of it.
Practical tactics for placement season:
- Apply wider, not just harder. Include GCCs, services delivery centres in tier-2 cities, and managed-services and infrastructure roles (NOC, cloud support, SRE trainee). These are real entry points into cloud and DevOps careers.
- Ask the right question in interviews. "What does training look like for the first six months?" tells you whether the firm has solved the training problem the World Bank describes.
- Compare offers on in-hand pay, not CTC. A ₹4.5 LPA services offer in Indore and a ₹6 LPA offer in Bengaluru can be closer than they look once tax, rent and travel are counted. Run the numbers before you decide.
- Don't hide that you use AI tools. Show judgement instead: where you trusted the tool, where you didn't, and why.
6. What to watch next
- Q3 FY27 results in January 2027. Will Infosys and HCLTech actually hit their fresher targets? Watch whether Wipro's headcount stabilises.
- Xpheno's November snapshot. Does the entry-level share move above 12%?
Bottom line
The October data does not show the end of the fresher job. It shows a market that is hiring again overall, but where entry-level roles are a small share of openings and AI is absorbing the tasks juniors used to learn on. The winning move for a 2026–27 graduate is to arrive already able to run something: a server, a cloud deployment, a pipeline. Then aim at the parts of the market that are growing (services delivery, GCCs, tier-2 centres), not only the parts that are loud.
