Data center technician:where IT is physical — racks, cables, power, and the 3 a.m. disk swap.
Every cloud is a building with racks in it. Racking and stacking, cabling, hardware replacement, remote hands for customers who are not on site, DG/UPS awareness — an entry path into infrastructure that does not need a degree, and the foundation for hardware/field engineer roles.
What the job is
- Rack and stack servers, switches, storage; structured cabling (copper/fibre), labelling, patching
- Hardware break-fix: disks, PSUs, DIMMs, firmware; vendor coordination (HPE/Dell/Cisco)
- Remote hands: reboot, console access, swap media, cable cross-connects for colocation customers
- Monitor environment: power (UPS/PDU load), cooling, access logs; follow change and safety procedures
Core skills
- Server/switch hardware, RAID controllers, iLO/iDRAC out-of-band management
- Cabling standards, fibre types, patch panels, cable management
- Power basics: PDU loads, redundant feeds, UPS/DG runtime

Labs to do this month- Build a mini rack (even a 6U) with proper cable management and labels; photograph before/after
- Configure iLO/iDRAC on a used server; update firmware; replace a disk in a RAID array live
