Interview prep · 🏢 Data Center Technician / Remote Hands / Hardware Engineer
Data Center Technician / Remote Hands / Hardware Engineer interview questionsand answers (30, by level).
The questions Indian employers actually ask for this role — fresher, mid-level and senior — with model answers written by engineers who sit on the other side of the table. Use with the role path and the 30-day lab plan.
Fresher / L1
Fundamentals they test on day one
1What is a rack unit (U) and a standard rack?
1U = 44.45 mm; a standard rack is 42U, 19-inch wide; plan weight and airflow.
2Hot aisle / cold aisle — why?
Servers draw cold air from the front and exhaust at the back; alternating aisles keeps intake cool and efficient.
3What are PDUs and why two?
Power distribution units in racks; A and B feeds from separate UPS paths so a single failure does not drop the rack.
4UPS vs DG set — roles?
UPS bridges seconds-to-minutes on batteries; diesel generator takes over for long outages; ATS switches sources.
5Cable types: Cat6, Cat6A, OM4, OS2?
Copper for 1/10 GbE (Cat6A to 100 m); OM4 multimode fibre for short 10–100 GbE; OS2 single-mode for long distance.
6What is a structured cabling standard?
Labelled, documented patch panels and horizontal cabling (TIA-568) so changes are traceable.
7ESD precautions?
Wrist straps, anti-static bags/mats, handle boards by edges — static kills components silently.
8What is KVM and OOB management (iLO/iDRAC)?
Remote console and power control independent of the OS; essential for remote hands.
9How do you label a server and ports?
Consistent scheme (site-row-rack-U), both ends of cables, update CMDB/NetBox.
10Tier I–IV data centers?
Uptime Institute tiers: Tier III concurrently maintainable (99.982%), Tier IV fault tolerant (99.995%).

What a working engineer must know
1Rack-and-stack 10 servers: your checklist?
Verify power/weight capacity, rails, airflow, A/B power, labelled cabling, OOB IPs, firmware update, burn-in, handover document with photos.
2Replace a failed disk in a RAID array safely?
Identify by LED/serial, confirm array status, hot-swap, verify rebuild, monitor; never pull the wrong drive — double-check slot.
3A rack is running hot — what do you check?
Blanking panels, airflow direction, CRAC/CRAH status, cable blocking, containment, load vs design kW, sensors.
4How do you plan power for a new rack?
Sum nameplate vs measured, 80% derating, A+B redundancy, PDU type (C13/C19), 3-phase if >7 kW, label circuits.
5Explain fibre cleaning and testing.
Inspect/clean connectors (one-click cleaner), light meter for loss budget, OTDR for faults; dirty fibre is the top cause of link errors.
6Remote hands request at 3 AM: console into a server and reseat a NIC — process?
Verify ticket and authorisation, locate by label, confirm with requester before touching, perform, photo evidence, update ticket.
7Firmware updates for servers/switches?
Vendor bundles (SPP/iDRAC), maintenance window, verify compatibility, backups of configs, update OOB first.
8Capacity: when is a rack “full”?
When any limit is reached: U space, power (kW), cooling, network ports, floor load.
9Asset management tools?
NetBox/CMDB for racks, devices, IPs, cables; barcodes; audits quarterly.
10Safety: what are the key rules on the floor?
No work on live power without authorisation, two-person rule for heavy lifts, fire suppression awareness (gas systems), escort policy.
Senior / L3
Design, judgement and leadership
1Plan a data center relocation of 40 racks.
Inventory and dependencies, rack elevation plans, network/power ready at destination, move waves with rollback, transport insurance/packing, cutover windows, validation checklist, decommission.
2Design power and cooling for a 500 kW hall?
N+1 UPS and DG, 2N distribution to racks, in-row or perimeter cooling with containment, PUE target, monitoring (DCIM), maintenance contracts.
3How do you run facilities maintenance without downtime?
Concurrent maintainability (Tier III), method statements, bypass procedures, load bank tests, vendor coordination, communication.
4Build a remote-hands service offering for colocation customers?
SLA tiers, ticketing, authorised contacts, task catalogue, pricing per hour/block, evidence standards, 24×7 roster.
5DCIM: what do you monitor and why?
Power per circuit, temperature/humidity, water leak, door access, UPS battery health, DG fuel; trending for capacity.
6Handling a cooling failure in a live hall?
Emergency procedure: portable cooling, open containment doors, shed non-critical load, vendor callout, communicate; afterwards fix redundancy.
7Audit readiness (ISO 27001 physical controls, Uptime)?
Access logs, CCTV retention, visitor process, maintenance records, test reports, documented procedures.
8Edge data centers in India — what is different?
Smaller, unmanned, remote monitoring, power quality issues, dust/heat, local DG servicing, physical security.
9Sustainability: how do you reduce PUE?
Containment, raise setpoints, free cooling where possible, efficient UPS modes, LED, consolidate loads, measure.
10Leading a 24×7 technician team?
Shift rotation, training matrix, runbooks, KPIs (ticket time, errors), career paths toward network/virtualization roles.
How to answer
Four habits that pass interviews
- Say the structure first“I’d check three things: …” — interviewers reward a method more than a lucky answer.
- Numbers and namesMention real tools, versions and figures from your lab; vague answers lose.
- Admit gaps cleanly“I haven’t run X in production; here is how I’d approach it” beats bluffing.
- Ask about the environmentScale, on-call, tooling — it shows you think like an operator.
