Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager (OLVM / oVirt) vs Proxmox VE:which should you choose?

Both are KVM. OLVM is Oracle’s packaging of oVirt with enterprise-style management; Proxmox is the independent project with the faster pace. Many Indian OLVM estates are now planning the move.

What we tell clients

OLVM works, but its upstream has slowed and the ecosystem is thin compared to Proxmox. Unless Oracle support or Oracle DB licensing ties you to it, a planned OLVM → Proxmox migration (exports or disk-level V2V, often with shared storage re-attached) is the sensible path; we have done these for telecom and SaaS estates.

FAQ

Questions we get on calls

How do I migrate OLVM VMs to Proxmox?
Export OVA/disk images or attach the same iSCSI/NFS storage, convert disks (qemu-img) and recreate VMs; downtime per VM is minutes.
Does Oracle DB licensing change?
Oracle counts physical cores on hard-partitioned hosts either way; get your licensing position reviewed before moving DB VMs.
Can both coexist?
Yes during migration; we typically run them side by side for 4–8 weeks.
