Our verdict

What we tell clients

Nutanix is the mainstream enterprise alternative when open source is not an option: supported, simple to operate, and bundled with HCI. It is not cheap — many Indian enterprises find the Nutanix quote lands near the new VMware quote — so run the three-year numbers, and also price a Proxmox + Ceph build; for non-certified workloads it is often a fraction of either.

FAQ

Questions we get on calls

Is AHV mature enough for production?
Yes; it has run banking and telecom workloads for years. Check your ISVs’ support matrices.
Does Nutanix lock me in?
Less than VMware on licensing, more on hardware (certified nodes). Exit via Move or standard V2V.
What about Proxmox for enterprises?
For non-certified workloads it is a credible third option; we run mixed estates where the certified core stays on VMware/Nutanix.
