Proxmox VE vs Microsoft Hyper-V:which should you choose?

Two “free” hypervisors that are free in different ways: Proxmox is open source; Hyper-V is bundled with Windows Server licences you may already own. Which one fits a Windows-heavy Indian office or a mixed estate?

  • You want open tooling, API and Ceph/ZFS
  • You do not own Datacenter licences
Choose Microsoft Hyper-V if…
  • You already pay for Windows Server Datacenter
  • Your admins live in AD, PowerShell and SCVMM
  • Everything is Windows and will stay Windows
Our verdict

What we tell clients

If you already own Datacenter licences and run only Windows, Hyper-V is hard to beat on paper — the hypervisor is effectively free and the guests are licensed. The moment Linux, containers or a modern backup story matter, Proxmox wins on tooling and total cost, and keeps you off the Azure Local subscription path Microsoft is steering towards.

FAQ

Questions we get on calls

Does Hyper-V still exist as a free product?
The free Hyper-V Server SKU ended with 2019. Today Hyper-V is a role inside Windows Server (licensed) or Azure Local (subscription).
Can Proxmox run Windows Server VMs legally?
Yes — you license Windows normally (per-core on the host for Standard/Datacenter) just as with VMware.
Which is easier for a small team?
Proxmox’s single web UI covers cluster, storage, backup and firewall; Hyper-V spreads the same across several consoles unless you buy SCVMM.
